The site of this project is located in 188 Dorrance Street, a field that can be described as “the boundary of urban and suburban area.” On one side of the field, there is the busy tense view of city life: tall buildings, thriving shops and restaurants, and incessant cars and buses. On the other side, there are abandoned factories and barren grounds. How do people think about the field? How people wish this field influencing their lives? The field, as a divider of a prosperous downtown and a desolate countryside, can have a closer relationship with people, and it is worthy to think about the field’s own appearance.. Therefore, what people want the field to be and what people want to see in this field is the topic of this project.
I doodled more than 70 elements that people may want to see or experience on the field and printed them on acetates, A frame that the acetates can be inserted in is also provided. The participators are supposed to compose the view that they want to see and experience on the field with the doodle pieces. They are also encouraged to draw their own thoughts on the blank acetates, too. By holding the frame on the field seeing through it, participators can view the doodled ideal world in actual environment. The interaction of the imaginary drawn composition and actual site view provides people a chance to think about the identity and function of the field, as well as people's wills that associated with their own personalities, habits, preferences, hobbits, and stories. One of the participator, Gino, decided to put a Ferris Wheel and a Sky Swing Ride in her frame because they are her favorites when she was a little girl. Right now she is a busy student and “does not have my own car to drive to Six Flag.” A wide grass field reminds her experience in an amusement park. Deyu, another participator, repeated “I must put the cathedral and the Buddha statue in one image” during composing with his elements, since he had never seen this weird view in real life. “Need some funny things happen,” he said. A participator loved the tree on the field and only need a cabin under the tree. Another participator realized that there is a constructing area near the field, so he decided to put a notice sign in his composition......I collected selected compositions in Gallery page, The compositions, which may be too small in photos, are replicated clearly on the left side of the picture of heir final solutions. Some of their interesting words that may reflect the reason of their choices are also provided. The video of some of their composing process are also included in. |
